New Plays Reading Series Presented by the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater and Willy’s Gym

The Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater and Willy’s Gym will present their New Plays Reading Series at Willy’s Gym in Eastham every Friday night in March. The plays that they selected are by some of the hottest American playwrights and each play will be staged by a major theater company later this year.

If you love theater and good food, I would really recommend this night out. It includes a four-course dinner, drinks, and a theatrical reading.  All for $29 a person!

The series starts on March 6 with Goldfish by John Kolvenbach. It’s a romantic comedy about an unlikely romance between two college students- Lucy and Albert, who must learn to deal with her mother and his father. Goldfish is scheduled to make its world premier in March at the South Coast Rep.

For a change of pace a southern drama - The Hard Weather Boating Party by Noami Wallace will be read. Three men meet in a hotel plot revenge against a powerful industrial entity. It evokes Upton Sinclair and turn of the century conflict as it explores the tension between industrial greed and the health of a neighborhood. It will debut at Humana Festival Of New American Plays in Louisville.

On March 20, Mrs. Whitney reunites us with the family we originally met in Goldfish, when we read Mrs. Whitney also by John Kolvenbach. But this time we learn more about the parents. Mrs Whitney is Lucy’s mother. Mrs. Whitney will debut at the prestigious Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago.

The series ends on March 27 with Slasher by Allison Moore. Lead character Sheena thinks her role in a low-budget slasher film is her ticket to stardom. But her ultra-feminist mother has other ideas. Slasher will also debut at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville.

This is a great time of year visit Cape Cod. You’ll have a fabulous time Friday night. Then you can go shopping, visit lighthouses, check out art galleries, antique stores, and grab some great food the rest of the weekend.

This type of event keeps you current in the theater and art world. And makes you a really interesting person. Leo and I love to go to events where you get to meet and talk to people as well as watch performances. This is one of our favorites.

Regional theater provides an important place for actors and playrights to make a living. Attending these events is our way of learning and saying thank you.
